Five-Leaf Maple, Marijauna-Leaf Maple
Acer pentaphyllum

A critically endangered, high-altitude species of maple, according to The Red List of Maples, "found only in a series of high altitude valleys between 2300 and 2900m near Muli in south west Sichuan, the four small populations consist of fewer than 200 trees." Perhaps one of the most beautiful species of maples, Acer pentaphyllum has not survived our zone 5 winters. My last seed-grown accession spends its winter dormancy in a cool, seasonal greenhouse.

Conchas Dam Pink Desert Willow
Chilopsis linearis 'Conchas Dam Pink'

One of the smaller desert willow cultivars, Conchas Dam Pink is also one of the hardiest, surviving temperatures below -20F in early January, 2017. A High Country Gardens introduction, Conchas Dam Pink is "from a newly discovered Northernmost population of Desert Willow" (High Country Gardens website), and probably the best choice for adventurous gardeners throughout the USDA Zone 5 Intermountain West. Planted along the northern fence, this accession has suffered minimal winter die-back, having grown almost three feet in two years.

Yellow Groove Bamboo
Phyllostachys aureosulcata

Despite Bisset's Bamboo's frequent billing as the hardiest of the Phyllostachys bamboo species, Yellow Groove Bamboo has thus far had a slight edge in hardiness, suffering very little die-back in years where Bissett's Bamboo lost most, if not all, of its growth above the rhizome.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bisset's Bamboo
Phyllostachys bissetii

One of the hardier (if not the hardiest) of the family that includes the Chinese timber bamboo, with the largest species, Phyllostachys vivax, reaching heights up to 70 feet. Compared to the giants of the family, Bisset's Bamboo has a much more restrained height; 20 to 25 feet is typical in milder climes than Colorado, and I expect that my two clumps (once they gain some girth) may eventually reach a respectable 15 feet, maybe even 20 feet. My experience thus far indicates that Bisset's Bamboo will suffer winter die-back to just above the lowest node on the culm (stalk), but if it behaves like my oldest Fargesia bamboos it will suffer less die-back as the mass of roots matures. Despite the winter die-back, Bisset's Bamboo survived -20F last year during its first year in the ground.
